Guarding and Possessiveness
Often people describe resource guarding and possessiveness over items when a dog has snapped or bitten.

We protect out home, car and we are likely to get aggy if someone tries to eat our pudding! Dogs can protect items too - these can include people, items, spaces and food.
There are often ALOT of body language signs that a dog will show to indicate that they are felling worried before any snap or bites can occur.. if we know what to look for. Knowing what to look for can help us take steps to help our dogs feel safer and less worried. Here are a few:
- Stiffening
- Lip licking (does not just happen with food)
- Placing a paw on the item and moving their body (could just be there leg) ready to move
- Hard stare
- Showing the whites of their eyes (whale eye/half moon)
- Leaning over the item with their body
- Staring as people move (watching)
Just a reminder that it's not simply the shouts we need to look for - the snapping and the growling. Look at the whole picture.
A growl is a warning sign and should never be punished - it is like taking the batteries out of a smoke alarm - it's a dogs way of saying enough.
